7 Things People Don't Realize You're Doing Because of Your Depression

Those with depression understand that you can’t just get over it. It takes a lot of time to overcome such an illness.

Which is why there are different things we all do in order to keep it under control, some of which are barely noticeable:

1.Making up really good excuses...not because you’re lazy or whatever, but because you have to have a cover story for when you come late to work or dinner parties. No one wants to hear that you were struggling not to cut yourself or were too weak to get up from bed.

2.Responding to bad news with pure apathy...because if not, you’ll just be very depressed by it, partially because you do care about things. So as a survival tactic, you guard your heart against feeling empathy with apathy.

3.You sleep a lot. And then don’t sleep when you should. People who suffer from depression tend to also struggle with insomnia. You’re constantly exhausted and nap frequently. Sometimes it’s because you’re tired. And sometimes it’s because sleep feels like the only thing you can do.

4. You turn down opportunities you actually want. You cancel social plans. You don’t follow up on a cool job opportunity. You hide, even when you wish you wouldn’t. Part of you feels undeserving. And the other part of you feels like you’ll find a way to ruin it, so it’s best to just say no.

5. Always concerned about the worst scenario. Anxiety patients always worry about the worst possible scenario in every situation and do not enjoy the present moment. They are simply sure that things will go wrong, that they will suffer from the most serious disease, their dates will go terribly wrong, and their job interviews will be a huge failure.

6. Having “personal days.” Where you spend time with yourself, not in an isolating way but in the sense that you’re getting to know yourself. Having nice days alone can help you to appreciate who you are as a person.
