This is the introductory poem for a novel I wrote entitled As I Live Dying. The story is centered around a young twenty something who is on her own for the first time and trying to live her life after years of complacency and depression. Her journey brings her full circle, starting with the darkest part of her life, which is when this poem was written.
This is my dark place
This is where the thoughts rest
This is where I contemplate
All the deepest secrets
Come into this world and you will see
What could happen to you if
You happened to be me
Chanting this is my dark place
How I wish it weren’t true
That the lightest for me
Was the darkest for you
This dark place consumes me
It’s all I can see
If only I could just breathe
Then maybe I could – no
Because I won’t let myself
This is what I deserve
What else have I earned?
My dark place is a reward
That only the first in last place should receive
This is all I achieved
Ask and you shall receive
